Fall Allergies – Can Your Home Be Making You Sick?

As the weather starts to turn colder and the leaves begin to fall, we start closing up our homes to keep the cold out and the heat in.  Many people start to notice allergies flaring up in the fall due to various allergens in the air such as ragweed and mold spores.  Often what feels like a “change of season” cold is actually allergies that present themselves with the same symptoms as the common cold.  These symptoms include but are not limited to cough, itchy eyes, sore throat, sneezing and just overall yuckiness.

In addition to the outside causes of allergies, there are inside culprits as well.  The American Academy of Allergy and Immunology (AAAA&I) talks about these inside allergens in an article on their website www.aaaai.org.  Some of these are dust mite droppings, animal dander, mold and cockroach droppings:
Dust mites can be found in bedding, carpeting and upholstery.  Keep these areas vacuumed and cleaned regularly.  Bedding should be washed and dried often and if possible, replace wall to wall carpeting with hard flooring and use rugs that can be washed or cleaned often.

Contrary to popular belief, most people are not allergic to animal hair.  It is more often the “dander” or dried skin flakes, saliva and pet urine that cause the trouble.  Even the breeds that are thought to be “hypo-allergenic” can still create a problem for allergy sufferers.  As in the case of dust mites, it is essential for your home to be vacuumed, cleaned and sanitized often to minimize the symptoms of these allergies.

Mold is one of the most common issues when it comes to allergies within your home.  We close up the windows to keep things nice and warm and the mold just thrives in a warm moist environment.  Some areas that may be harboring the mold spores are inside bath toys, in washing machine seals, showers and shower door railings, drain pans under the fridge, fridge seals, sponge holders in the sink and so many more places that you may not even think about.  These areas should be inspected and cleaned regularly.

Though cockroaches are associated with big cities and dirty areas, they can actually be found anywhere. Make sure floors are cleaned and pet food is not left out.  Seal up any cracks and crevices where they may be able to enter. Clean under stoves, refrigerators, toasters, microwaves and toaster ovens where crumbs can accumulate.  Clean stove tops, counters, kitchen surfaces and cabinets regularly.

We look forward to the cozy holiday season and enjoy the warm comfort of our homes.  It is imperative to our health to make sure that the areas we spend our time in are clean and free of these allergy culprits so that we can enjoy the upcoming season.

Prescott Maid to Order discusses housecleaning tips to help avoid allergies in your Prescott home

Prescott Maid to Order can help reduce allergens in your Prescott home with professional home cleaning.
Here in Prescott we work hard to maintain our homes. As hard as we try to keep things clean, we unknowingly track things into our homes - including the dreaded allergies from pollen. Prescott Maid to Order wants to share some tips with you on how professional cleaning can help reduce allergies in your Prescott home.

HEPA Filters
High-Efficiency Particulate Air - HEPA for short - filters are specifically made to trap allergens in the home that can make it past other vacuum cleaners that are only designed to suction. If your vacuum doesn’t have a HEPA filter, then you are likely breathing in allergens as you are vacuuming.

Here are a few tips about what else you can do to eliminate some of the allergens that get into your home:

  • Cutting clutter: getting rid of boxes can help with dust and hidden allergens in the home like dust mites and cockroaches
  • Wearing a mask while you are cleaning will help, but we also recommend leaving your house for a few hours once you are done. This will limit your exposure to allergens you might have lifted into the air while cleaning.
  • Keep your bathroom free of mold by scrubbing tile regularly
  • Wash sheets weekly in hot water with unscented cleaners and detergents
  • Don’t air dry your laundry outside where it can be exposed to pollen, which again enters your home unknowingly
  • Clean entryways by sweeping or vacuuming
  • Don’t shampoo carpets due to the risk of mold growth or dust mite populations
  • If you are allergic to dust mites, ask another family member to do it.

Prevention
These are certainly not required but they will make your life easier when you are cleaning and help prevent allergy flare-ups.

  • Rugs and carpets can trap allergens, so having hardwood, tile, or vinyl flooring will reduce your exposure to these. Getting smaller rugs that you can wash will also help.
  • Encase mattresses and pillows with dust-proof covers to reduce problems with dust mites.
  • Consider replacing drapes or horizontal blinds with roller shades which will keep dust and allergens at bay.
  • Taking off shoes before you go in the house will also help keep allergens from being tracked in.
  • Keeping pets out of the bedroom is tough for some of us, but if you are allergic, don’t let them sleep on the bed. This is a nightmare for anyone with allergies.
  • Use air-conditioning instead of opening windows when it is hot. Air-conditioning filters the air preventing dust, pollens, and any other triggers from getting in.

When it comes to allergen control, it can be a challenge, especially in the springtime in Prescott. We hope these tips will help prevent the causes of allergies around your home.
